On October 29, the historic fourth-order Fresnel lens at Point Wilson Lighthouse in Port Townsend lit up the night sky once again, marking a major milestone in its restoration journey. This isn’t just about relighting a beacon; it’s the revival of a significant piece of maritime heritage.
Originally built in 1879 and reconstructed in 1913, the Point Wilson Lighthouse has guided countless ships through the treacherous waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Admiralty Inlet. However, decades of exposure had left the lighthouse in need of significant repairs. Stepping up to the challenge, the U.S. Lighthouse Society undertook extensive restoration efforts, upgrading vital infrastructure, reviving historic buildings, and restoring the lighthouse's surroundings.
As part of this journey, the society has scheduled an official public relighting ceremony for May next year, after the Fresnel lens completes its testing period. This event will celebrate the lighthouse’s renewed light and honor the many volunteers whose hard work and dedication made the restoration possible.
The U.S. Lighthouse Society invites the community to join this historic moment by attending the ceremony, donating, or volunteering. Together, the people of Port Townsend and beyond can ensure that this enduring beacon continues to shine for future generations.
Thank you so much for sharing! Such a great day to light up the sky - October 29th! Also my youngest son's 38th birthday! We are excited to come back out to the lighthouse and stay in August of 2025!
